2020 Members Open Show
“I continue to be impressed by the fact that we are all using the same medium yet each finds a way to express our individual voices so differently. Let’s keep our hands covered with pastel dust and our eyes focused just above the horizon as we attempt to create our way forward.”
“Thank you for this opportunity.” Judy Perry, Juror of Awards

Award Winners
Best In Show: Wendy McClatchy, “Boxed In”
NFS | 16″ x 16″
This beautifully drawn, masterfully composed, skillfully executed piece takes Best In Show. From the delicate shadows on the surface of the table and wall to the folds in the fabric that express the weight put upon them, to the distortions looking through the glass this piece is powerful. Yet the pallet is quiet, the value shift is what gives it punch, balancing the rich value of the inside of the box against the soft tones of grays and whites, then adding a touch of color in the bowl to pull everything together, Brilliant.
First Place: Jeri Greenberg, “3 A.M.”
$1500 | 18″ x 24″ (framed)
This piece demonstrates to me the power of the limited complementary pallet. Using the warm undertones with the cool blue/grays is very pleasing yet it expresses the struggle I’ve had at three o’clock in the morning trying to hold onto sleep. The soft free mark making in the background surrounding the harder more defined edges of the figure add to the tension, telling the story. The clock seems to be getting larger as the time ticks away, it’s beginning to merge with the figure and take away what precious hours left. Who has not felt that.
2nd Place: Susan Ellis, “Long Haul”
NFS | 14″ x 26″
The power conveyed in this piece is what keeps me engaged. You can feel the weight of the objects being pulled by the tight rope and the position of the body. The strong more detailed shapes of the figure and clamming tools being pulled, placed against the more abstract undefined background that supports but doesn’t compete, keeps the focus clear. This pallet is so pleasing to me along with the skillful use of red to tie things together.
3rd Place: Susan Kerrigan, “Thatcher’s Bog”
NFS | 11″ x 14″
This piece stood out to me because of the fresh, spontaneous, seemingly effortless mark making. I know how hard it is to make something look easy. It’s full of energy yet gives places for the eye to rest as well.
