our history
1995 - 1996
Sarah Fielding-Gunn(Ricci) and twenty-three hopeful friends began organizing a society for pastel painters and in 1996, they met at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham where they elected their first board of volunteers.
The organization, Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod (PPSCC) was incorporated.
Breakfast meetings were held in the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Barnstable and Truro and invited local artists John DiMestico, Rosalie Stambler Nadeau, Carole Chisholm Garvey and Jane Lincoln to inaugurate a series of workshops.
1996
The society’s first annual national exhibition was held at the Creative Arts Center in Chatham in August 1996. Eighty paintings were selected from over 160 works and were juried by established artists or art dealers who would lend prestige to the show.
The first year’s jurors were Helen Addison (Addison-Holmes Gallery, Orleans), Cape artist John DiMestico, and Geoffrey Smith (Aries East Gallery, Brewster). Prizes ranged from $200-$500, and established the tradition of awards of art supplies.
The total value of the prizes reached up to $2000 in the ensuing years and the jurors of awards are now internationally acclaimedMaster Pastelists from around the country.
1998
Cape Cod Life featured some of the Cape’s pastelists and early PPSCC members. The popularity of pastel as a medium was growing and so were connections and reciprocal agreements with other local and New England pastel societies.
2005
The presidency passed to Barbara Stone, a Cape artist and teacher, who helped to promote a full-time website. PPSCC sponsored two to three exhibits a year at places such as Highfield Hall in Falmouth, the Brewster Ladies Library, the Cape Cod Conservatory in Barnstable, as well as the Creative Arts Center in Chatham and Cotuit Center for the Arts.
2010
A partnership with the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth for our yearly juried National Pastel Show called For Pastels Only (FPO) was formed. This show continues to be a prestigious renowned national pastel show.
2011 and beyond...
The organization has grown with the addition of annual Member exhibits, biennial Signature shows, and through affiliation with the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS), PPSCC members now compete internationally across the USA and in Europe.
Many members have been juried into the Pastel Society of America and several have achieved Eminent Pastelist status with IAPS.
As part of the mission of PPSCC, educating and nurturing pastel artists through education is provided by offering workshops, and demonstrations both online and in person on Cape Cod.
Young artists and seasoned pastelists are awarded scholarships to foster their growth through workshops.
Members have been featured in The Artists Magazine, Pastel Journal, Pastelink, and Cape Cod Arts Magazine to mention a few notable periodicals.
The corporate board continues to depend on dedicated volunteers to support the mission and continue in this great legacy.
